About Coach Blaver
Coach Richard Blaver was a school teacher for over 30 years in Northern Nevada. He began his career in Lee Vining, CA, and later moved to the Dayton, NV area to teach. He was a wrestling coach and a fabulous teacher.
Prior to his teaching career, Richard served during the Vietnam war. He never knew a stranger and loved to talk with anyone who had the time.
His Native American heritage was extremely important to him, and he had deep roots in his community.
Unfortunately, Richard was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in 2010 at the age of 62.
After four years of being his primary caretaker, his wife, Natalie, who was also caring for her mother who was battling the disease, had to make the heartbreaking decision to place Richard in a care facility.
He maintained his sense of humor up until the time when communication became difficult for him.
After approximately nine years of battle and 24 years of marriage, Richard Blaver passed on May 19, 2018. Natalie, and family friend, Debora McCurry, who has also lost loved ones to Alzheimer’s, have become passionate fighters and fundraisers for the Alzheimer’s Association in Coach Richard Blaver’s honor and in hopes of finding the “first survivor”.
